New Shangri-La five-star property rises near the Himalayas
Hong Kong-based luxury hotel developer Shangri-La recently announced the opening of its latest mixed-use branded property in Tibet, also known as the ‘roof of the world’. The Shangri-La Lhasa project is the latest addition to the growing number of luxury properties on the highest plateau on the planet. In 2011, St Regis Lhasa became the first-ever luxury development in the region when it opened its doors to guests, according to Free Malaysia Today. Set some 3,650 metres above sea level, the 289-unit, five-star development features Tibetan architecture, which fits perfectly with the neighbouring historical and UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as Potala Palace and Norbulingka Palace, the former primary and summer residences, respectively, of the Dalai Lama. Similar to the existing high-end properties in the area, Shangri-La Lhasa has its own oxygen lounge and each room is also equipped with its own oxygen tank to help guest acclimatise to the high altitude. Guests will be offered a ceremonial white silk scarf—a hada—upon arrival, and will be serenaded by the staff singing a traditional Tibetan song. Other hotel amenities include wireless Internet access, a business centre, parking facilities, car and courier services, and a 24-hour room service. The property also features six one-bedroom and four one-bedroom deluxe serviced apartments, fully furnished, aimed for long-stay leases. Tenants are eligible to use the hotel’s room service, a number of health club facilities and get discounts on featured services. Image credit: Shangri-La Lhasa
